에이브러햄 링컨의 게티스버그 연설 (1863년 11월19일)

 

 

지금으로부터 87년 전 우리 조상은 자유 속에서 키워졌고, 모든 사람은 평등하게 태어났다는 신조에 바쳐진 새로운 나라를 이 대륙에 창설했습니다.

 

지금 우리는 이와 같은 나라가 또 이와 같이 키워지고 이와 같이 바쳐진 모든 나라가 과연 영속할 수 있는지의 여부를 실험하는 커다란 내전을 치르고 있습니다. 우리는 그런 전쟁의 커다란 싸움터에서 만나고 있습니다. 우리는 이 싸움터의 일부를 이 나라가 영원무궁할 수 있도록 이곳에서 생명을 바친 사람들의 최후의 안식처로 바치기 위하여 모인 것입니다.

 

그러나 이보다 더 큰 의미로 이 땅을 바칠 수 없습니다. 이 땅을 성스럽게 할 수 없습니다.

이 땅을 깨끗하게 할 수 없습니다.

 

여기서 싸운 용사들은 살아남은 사람이든 전사한 사람이든 다 같이 우리의 빈약한 힘으로는 더 보탤 수도 더 뺄 수도 없을 정도로 이 땅을 성스럽게 하였습니다. 세계는 지금 우리가 여기서 말하고 있는 것을 별로 마음에 새기지도 않을 것이며 오래 기억하지도 않을 것입니다.

 

그러나 세계는 여기서 쓰러진 용사들이 지금까지 그렇게도 훌륭하게 추진해 온 미완성의 사업에 몸을 바쳐야 할 사람들은 오히려 우리들 살아 있는 사람들입니다.

 

우리 앞에 남아있는 대사업에 몸을 바쳐야 할 사람들은 오히려 우리들입니다.

그 대사업이란 이들 명예로운 전사자가 최후까지 온 힘을 다하여 싸운 대의에 대하여 우리는 더욱 더 헌신해야 한다는 것, 이들 전사자의 죽음을 헛되게 하지 않으리라고 굳게 맹세하는 것, 이 나라를 하나님의 뜻으로 새로운 자유의 나라로 탄생시키는 것,

 

그리고

국민의, 국민에 의한, 국민을 위한 정부가 지상에서 사라지지 않도록 하는 것입니다.

 

Lincoln's Gettysburg Address

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow, this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us ―

that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion ― that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain ― that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom ― and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
